Barcode scanning at every step

At Karlholm Logistics everything we handle is scanned, so you can follow stock and deliveries in Ongoing WMS.

StepWhat scanning does
ReceivingThe item or logistics unit is scanned when goods are received and registered.
Picking and packingScanning verifies that the right item and quantity belong to the order.
StocktakingScanning replaces manual lists and makes deviations easier to document.

Setting up scanning for your goods: identify which codes are used (EAN/GTIN, internal codes, SSCC), quality-assure the item master, decide the control points, test what happens with a wrong code or wrong item, and follow up scanning deviations. Read more in why scanning at every step gives better control.

Batch and lot traceability

Batch and lot traceability makes it possible to tell different production or delivery lots apart even when they share the same SKU. It matters when quality, shelf life or recalls need to be followed.

  • Receiving – the batch or lot is registered when goods arrive and linked to SKU and quantity.
  • Storage – different batches must be kept apart even when the item number is the same.
  • Dispatch – picking rules can control which batch is shipped and record where it went.

Typical setup: decide the batch format, define when the batch is scanned, set a FEFO or FIFO rule where needed, test returns and restocking, and test tracing backwards and forwards.

Serial number tracking

Serial number tracking goes a step further than batch traceability and identifies every physical unit. It suits products where service, warranty, value or regulatory requirements call for unit-level tracking.

  • Unit level – each physical product gets an identity that distinguishes it from other units of the same SKU.
  • Scanning – serial numbers are captured digitally at the relevant warehouse events.
  • Returns and service – unit-level tracking makes it easier to verify exactly which product comes back.

Typical setup: define the serial number format, decide the control points, test duplicates and missing numbers, link serial numbers to orders, and test the returns flow.

Whether batch, lot or serial number tracking is needed for your products is decided during onboarding. Terms such as FEFO, GTIN and SSCC are explained in the glossary.
