The warehouse step after the terminal
Ports and terminals handle the ship, train or aircraft and the terminal services. For the goods owner, the next practical question comes after the terminal: how should the goods be received, checked, palletised, stored and picked? That is where a 3PL warehouse comes in.
Whatever the transport node, the core service after the terminal is the same: pallet handling, container unloading, cross-docking, storage and order picking. Goods from outside the EU must be customs-cleared by the responsible customs party before they enter our normal warehouse flow.
Typical flow
- The inbound flow is announced with container, trailer, pallet or delivery references.
- Transport from the terminal to our warehouse is planned with your forwarder.
- The goods are received and checked against documents and labelling.
- Container goods are unloaded, or palletised goods are registered directly.
- Goods are stored, cross-docked, or picked and dispatched to customers in Sweden.
| Step | What it means |
|---|---|
| Port or terminal | Container or other goods are handled at the terminal before onward road or rail transport. |
| Transport to the 3PL | Goods are moved from the terminal to our warehouse as booked. |
| Receiving | Pallets, cartons and documents are reconciled against the advance notice. |
| Storage | Goods are stored as full pallets or split for other storage and picking. |
| Order flow | Goods go out as B2B orders, fulfillment or other agreed distribution. |
Port of Gävle
The Port of Gävle is a major container and logistics hub on Sweden's east coast; Gävle is a little over half an hour by road from our warehouse. Container goods can be transported on after terminal handling for unloading, sorting or storage; palletised goods can be received, registered and stored for the next order flow; goods can then be dispatched as full pallets, B2B orders, carton picks or fulfillment orders.
According to Gävle Hamn, its container terminal handles around 200,000 TEU a year, has expanded capacity for 600,000 TEU and is connected by a rail shuttle to Stockholm Nord in Rosersberg. Source: Gävle Hamn – services and terminals (in Swedish).
Stockholm Nord, Rosersberg
Stockholm Nord in Rosersberg is an intermodal hub where container and rail flows meet road transport and warehousing. After a container or other goods have left the terminal, a 3PL warehouse can take over receiving, checking, pallet handling and order operations – including staging and cross-docking for goods that already have a destination.
YILPORT describes Stockholm Nord as one of Sweden's larger intermodal terminals and a container depot with a direct rail shuttle to Gävle Container Terminal. Source: YILPORT – Stockholm Nord via YILPORT Gävle.
Stockholm Norvik Port
Stockholm Norvik Port handles container and ro-ro flows close to the Stockholm region's large consumer market. We do not replace the port's container terminal or ro-ro handling; our role is a possible next warehouse step once the container, trailer or goods have left the terminal.
A container leaving Norvik may need container unloading and palletising before the goods are ready for storage, while palletised goods in a trailer or ro-ro flow can go more directly to pallet handling. If the goods already have known recipients, cross-docking can reduce the need for normal putaway.
According to Stockholms Hamnar, the container terminal at Stockholm Norvik covers 20 hectares, has a rail connection and a fully developed capacity of 500,000 TEU a year; its terminal services include stripping and stuffing, customs warehousing, storage, inspection and transport. Stockholm's ferry ports – Finland and the Baltics
Ferry and ro-ro flows between Stockholm, Finland and the Baltic states create recurring flows of trailers, pallets and general cargo. After the port, a separate 3PL warehouse can take over receiving, storage, picking and distribution – for example pallets in trailers going to storage, mixed B2B goods split between several Swedish recipients, intermediate storage while waiting for orders or campaigns, and palletised inflow used as stock for carton or unit orders.
Stockholms Hamnar describes Stadsgården and Värtahamnen as central ports for goods and passengers to and from Finland and the Baltic states, while Kapellskär is important for fast freight transport to and from Finland and Estonia. Source: Stockholms Hamnar – about the port system (in Swedish).
Stockholm Arlanda Airport – air freight
Air freight is often used when time, value or delivery requirements make transport time-critical. This page does not cover the air freight service itself, but the logistics step after the goods have been released for onward transport. A well-planned warehouse flow can receive pallets or cartons, register the goods and make them quickly available for B2B orders or fulfillment.
Because air freight is chosen when time matters, the next warehouse step should be clear before the shipment leaves Arlanda: item data, delivery references and priority orders can be prepared so goods move faster from receiving to fulfillment. Air freight can feed B2B, spare parts, project and ecommerce flows alike, and incoming pallets can be broken down for carton or unit picking.
Swedavia describes Stockholm Arlanda as an important gateway for air freight and logistics; its planned Cargo City area comprises around 150,000 square metres of freight and logistics buildings. Source: Swedavia – Cargo City at Stockholm Arlanda Airport (in Swedish).
When this setup fits
- you import container goods and need a warehouse step after the port
- ro-ro, trailer or air freight goods need storage or order handling
- imported goods should be split between several Swedish customers or channels
- you need to combine container handling with picking, packing and distribution
When you contact us, describe where the goods come in, approximate volume, pallet or carton structure and what should happen after receiving.
Frequently asked questions
Is Karlholm Logistics located at a port or at Arlanda?
No. Our warehouse is in Karlholmsbruk, near the E4 between Gävle and Uppsala. This page describes the warehouse step that follows after goods have passed through the port, rail terminal or air cargo terminal and been transported on.
Who transports the goods from the terminal to your warehouse?
The final leg is planned together with your freight forwarder or carrier. We need an advance notice with container, pallet or delivery information so that receiving can be planned.
Can goods arriving on full pallets be split into smaller orders?
Yes. Incoming pallets or cartons can be registered and then used as stock for carton or unit picking for B2B or ecommerce orders.
